Alan Irvine steps down due to personal reasons

According to the Mail although the article says he will take on a consultancy role at the club. Billy McInlay suggested as Moyes new number 2,
As one of those who believe that the coaching staff has been one of the reasons for this years big improvement its not welcome news.

Is there something that says the Assistant Manger is a senior position to First Team Coach? What do they do anyway?
Irvine is listed purely as "Assistant" on the OS. There was a long running joke on the Office about the difference between "Assistant Manager" and "Assistant to the Manager".

On what the consultancy role is the idea, elsewhere in the thread of being a scout for Moyes makes sense. Perhaps it could also be watching our Europa league opposition ahead of games?
On McInlay his stints with Moyes do seem to have been in some of less impressive spells (although of course with us during Moyes first stint) but increasingly the news seems to be that he is a shoe-in as the replacement.

Shame to break up a great group but a small change helps to keep it fresh so not necessarily a bad thing.

You'd think that Nolan would be after the job. If he don't get it then either he's given up all ambitions to become a manager again or he will likely leave as well.

McKinlay coming back....was with Moyes at Sunderland and Sociedad, and recently number 2 at Stoke...so I guess that's a pedigree of sorts.

In past years, losing somebody like Irvine would be a huge blow - he's a very good #2.

But we are actually well-off for decent backroom staff because of the excellent work Moyes has done. Nevin, Pearce, Nolan. It's a good group. Option of McKinlay, too.

Nevin is highly rated.

This is a shame. Moyes was absolutely indebted to Irvine's input and he will be a huge miss. I don't know a lot about McGinley but apparently he is the man Irvine has advised to bring in. Irvine will also have a consultancy role and so his input will still be part of our management set up.

By all accounts Irvine is massively respected by all the players.

That's a shame. Moyes works well with Irvine - they've spent so much time coaching together.

Could see Irvine effectively becoming Moyes' chief scout for first-team players. He has a good idea of what constitutes a Moyes-type player.

I'd like Joe Cole actually. He's one of the best pundits around, talks really well about the game. He just has an unfortunate voice.

Fwiw, and I forget where I heard this, was told that Paul NEVIN is very much the brains of the operation so I'd be more worried if we lost him.

bbc at the end of the current Championship season:

Stoke City assistant manager Billy McKinlay has left the Championship club by mutual consent.
The 51-year-old had been number two to Michael O'Neill at the Potters since being appointed in November 2019.
McKinlay also worked under O'Neill with Northern Ireland and was part of David Moyes' coaching teams at Real Sociedad, Sunderland and West Ham.

I put this on the other thread. It was decided that Jack needed some experience at match side before taking the club over, so he'll be number 2. Irvine had to step aside.
